While ripping your hair out, $enduser casually mentions that he installed a security program that his local bank recommended to him (I'm looking at you Bank Of The West). Swap the machine out, new OS install, and all is fine. New disk, new install, everything is fine again and computer is working great.ĭay and a half later, $enduser is saying same problem find anything wrong AGAIN with the system. Figure, must be a rootkit, right? So you go scorched earth and bomb the machine from orbit. You spend 3 hours scanning the thing with malwarebytes and various antivirus tools. On a 7th gen Core i5 with 16GB of RAM and an SSD. $enduser is reporting their computer is super slow - 10 minutes to boot on, web pages failing to load completely or not at all, web browsers taking 5 minutes to load. in fact, it is so much so like the one we live in, that it IS the one we live in! In a world, not unlike the one we currently live in. Not entirely a r/sysadmin issue, but we've all been called upon to do tasks like end user support, virus/trojan removal, family computer cleanup.
